Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian, R-San Luis Obispo, named Bridget Ready, the co-founder of a local nonprofit group that helps disabled children, as the 33rd Assembly District’s 2011 Woman of the Year.
Ready of San Luis Obispo-based Jack’s Helping Hand was honored with a framed certificate during a ceremony in Sacramento, officials said Monday.
Ready and her husband, Paul, helped establish Jack’s Helping Hand to provide resources to families of disabled or ill children. It’s named after their infant son, Jack, who died in 2004 from brain cancer.
“Her ability to turn the tragic loss of her young son, Jack, into an opportunity to help countless Central Coast families serves as an inspiring example for all of us,” Achadjian said in a statement.

Hundreds of Central Coast children have received assistance from the group such as motorized chairs, prosthetic limbs, high-tech hearing devices, adaptive eyewear and specially trained service dogs.
The organization is also raising money to fund a 30-acre disabled-access park and playground in Nipomo.
The Assembly’s Woman of the Year ceremony has been held annually since 1987 to help commemorate Women’s History Month.
