ANAHEIM — Big West Player of the Year Rachel Clancy scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds today in leading Cal Poly's women's basketball team to a 70-55 win over Pacific in the semifinals of the Big West Conference Tournament at the Honda Center.
The top-seeded Mustangs (18-11) will play either third-seeded UC Riverside or fourth-seeded UC Davis in Saturday's championship game at 1 p.m. That game will be televised by FSN Prime Ticket and the winner will earn the Big West's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UC Riverside and UC Davis were schedule to play later today. UC Riverside beat UC Davis in last year's championship game after edging Cal Poly in the semifinals.
Cal Poly will be playing in the Big West championship game for the second time in the past three years. In 2009, Cal Poly lost to UC Santa Barbara in the championship game. The Mustangs have never appeared in the NCAA Tournament as a Division I team.
Today's game was tied at 32 at halftime, but the Mustangs forced nine Pacific (9-21) turnovers in the first five minutes of the second half to open an 11-point lead. Cal Poly scored 19 points off 20 turnovers by the seventh-seeded Tigers.
Abby Bloetscher also had a big game for Cal Poly with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
