Tearing down to build up at Poly: Work begins for science center

Demolition has started on the site for the so-called ‘Spider Building’ at Cal Poly, part of the project to create the $132 million Center for Science and Mathematics.

The 200,000-square-foot facility for the College of Science and Mathematics will be a multitiered structure rising six levels. It will offer more classrooms and lab space than had been available, and will house instruction and research rooms for a variety of the college’s disciplines, an environmental biotechnology institute and a technology center.

The ‘Spider Building’ was so named because of its shape. The structure is being built in the center of the campus, and is slated to be completed by fall 2013.
