Two Paso Robles students have been invited to join the California Band Directors All-State Honor Band, which will perform in Fresno next month.

Cameron Holt, a tuba player from Paso Robles High School, and Maddie Baxstresser, a bass clarinetist at Saint Rose School, were two of 520 musicians chosen from a pool of 3,500 candidates. Holt, a 15-year-old sophomore, was selected to be in the high school honor concert band, while Baxstresser, 12, will be in the junior high honor concert band.

There are five honor bands total — three high school bands and two junior high bands.

Students hoping to be in the honor band must submit CDs to the Band Directors Association in order to audition. More than 2,000 high school and 1,500 junior high students submitted CDs this year.

Both Holt and Baxstresser are private students of local band director Ken Schmutz.

The two will perform with the honor bands during the California All-State Music Education Conference Feb. 17 to 20 at the Fresno Radisson Hotel and Convention Center.
