UPDATE: Highway 1 through Big Sur reopened after slide

Update:

Caltrans has removed the road closure notice from its website and CHP reports the slide near Esalen has been cleared.

Original story:

Highway 1 through south Big Sur is closed this morning, Caltrans reports on its website, which says flooding has closed the highway about 18 miles north of the San Luis Obispo-Monterey County line. That’s near Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.

A highway patrol report says half-ton boulders were reported in the highway about 3 a.m. Wednesday, shortly after a weather front brought over an inch of rain to area starting before midnight.

Another CHP report says Caltrans was on on its way at about 8 a.m. to a rock, dirt or mud slide about 32 miles north of the county line at the Esalen Institute. That slide was blocking the northbound lane of the highway.
