Tom O’Malley is the new mayor of Atascadero.
The Atascadero City Council appointed him Tuesday night, after discussing the traits they sought in a mayor — someone who is trustworthy and puts what is best for the city before his or her own politics.
O’Malley was previously the city’s mayor pro tem — someone appointed to lead the five-member council in absence of a mayor. Bob Kelley is the new mayor pro tem.
Outgoing Mayor Roberta Fonzi congratulated the new appointees at a public ceremony before Tuesday’s regular council meeting.

Atascadero is the only city of the county’s seven where the council appoints a council member to serve a one-year term. But that will soon change.
In November, voters approved a measure that will allow them to elect their mayor to a two-year term starting with the 2012 election.
Next year, O’Malley will lead council members Fonzi, Kelley, Brian Sturtevant and Jerry Clay.
