County health officials are reporting that up to 50,000 gallons of sewage might have spilled into Chorro Creek on Monday when a tree crashed through an above-ground sewage line that crosses the waterway.
The county does not know for sure how much might have spilled. The 50,000 gallon total is the maximum worst-case release that might have resulted.
The Health Agency is warning people to avoid contact with the creek, as well as Morro Bay and its surrounding estuary. Sport harvesting of any shellfish from Morro Bay and the estuary is also prohibited until further notice.
