Rain leading to flooding, road closures and some evacuations along Central Coast

Parts of the dirt bridge across the Salinas River on Halcon Road in southern Atascadero were washed out by Sunday afternoon.
Parts of the dirt bridge across the Salinas River on Halcon Road in southern Atascadero were washed out by Sunday afternoon.

Central Coast roads remain slick and floodwaters are gathering around some low-lying areas and creeks as the rain continues on Sunday.

The CHP reports that it is assisting the evacuation of several homes near Oceano County Airport because of flooding in and around Arroyo Grande Creek.

People being evacuated are being taken to the Oceano Community Center until local volunteers with the American Red Cross can find them a place to stay, according to the CHP.

The local Red Cross chapter reports that as of 2:15 p.m. it was in the process of opening a shelter at the request of the Five Cities Fire Authority to accommodate families who are being evacuated because of flooding.

The shelter is at Arroyo Grande High School, 495 Valley Road, Arroyo Grande, according to the Red Cross. The aid group said 14 of its volunteers and staff are now responding.

Meanwhile, vehicles are being reported caught in rising waters at various locations around the county, most recently along Thompson Road near Highway 166 in Nipomo.

And a mud and rockslide was reported about 1:45 p.m. along Highway 41 just south of the Kern County Line along the key route to Fresno and Interstate 5.
