UPDATE: All lanes back open after splitting oak tree caused traffic delays on Hwy. 101 north of Atascadero

Update:

All lanes of northbound Highway 101 at San Ramon Road were reopened by 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Caltrans removed a dead tree near the highway that was splitting and could have fallen into the road.

Original story:

Drivers on northbound Highway 101 in the North County are experiencing significant traffic delays as Caltrans has one lane closed to finish trimming a falling tree near San Ramon Road just north of Atascadero, according to the CHP.

Union Pacific railroad staff alerted Caltrans at 9:36 a.m. that a large oak tree was splitting and could possibly fall on the highway, according to Caltrans representatives.

Caltrans closed both northbound lanes for around an hour to remove parts of the tree. The slow lane is still closed, and Caltrans officials said at 1 p.m. that both lanes will be open "soon."
