5 plead not guilty to multicounty crime spree that ended near San Simeon

Five people accused in a weekend crime spree that ended in a shootout with San Luis Obispo County sheriff's deputies have pleaded not guilty to multiple felony counts.

Prosecutors say three men and two women stole an SUV in Fresno on Sunday and drove through Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties, where they allegedly shot at two robbery victims and tried to run down a sheriff's deputy. They were arrested near San Simeon after a shootout that wounded the driver, 28-year-old Joe Hernandez Jr.

The male suspects each are charged with attempted murder, attempted carjacking and weapons counts. All are charged with auto theft, burglary and gang enhancements.

The Monterey County Herald reports that a public defender entered not-guilty pleas on their behalf Thursday. They face charges in both Fresno and Monterey counties.
