Sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday afternoon arrested a 35-year-old man in San Luis Obispo following a brief foot chase into a creek near the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.

Clifford Louis Havard of San Luis Obispo was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and making harassing phone calls, a misdemeanor, said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Rob Bryn. He was also booked into County Jail on suspicion of obstructing or resisting a public officer.

Deputies recognized Havard, who had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on a felony charge, about 1:15 p.m. in the 4000 block of Santa Fe Road as he was riding a bicycle.

When deputies tried to stop him, Havard jumped off the bike and ran into the creek bed, Bryn said. Sheriff officials called the CHP canine unit and a CHP helicopter for assistance.

Havard was arrested in the creek bed and remained in County Jail on Tuesday evening in lieu of $47,000 bail.
