Man hit and killed by bus in SLO earlier this month had high blood alcohol content

The San Luis Obispo resident who died Oct. 13 after he was struck by a county Regional Transit Authority bus had a blood alcohol content of .21, police said Tuesday morning.

Richard Cox, 71, was crossing the road just north of Roundhouse Avenue when the bus on Route 12A traveling north on Santa Barbara Street near the intersection with Broad Street struck him. He suffered major injuries, including head trauma.

San Luis Ambulance took Cox to French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators are still waiting on the blood alcohol limit of the bus driver, but add that nothing suggests that she had any alcohol in her system.

“The accident investigation has not been completed and the traffic team will be conducting some tests later this week or early next week,” said Ian Parkinson, spokesman for the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
