Morro Bay man officially claims $135 million lottery jackpot

Nearly two months after buying his winning lottery ticket, John Davis of Morro Bay claimed his jackpot worth $135 million.

Davis chose the cash option for his prize and will take home more than $93 million before taxes, according to lottery officials. Davis purchased the winning ticket for the Aug. 27 drawing at Bottle Liquor and Deli at 999 Main St. in Morro Bay.

Davis went into the lottery’s San Francisco office Wednesday morning to claim the prize. When someone claims a prize, lottery officials ask several questions, such as what they plan to spend the money on.

However, Davis only wanted the minimum facts released, which are his name, the amount of the prize and where the ticket was purchased, said Alex Traverso, lottery spokesman.“He was very tight-lipped about everything,” Traverso said.

The owners of Bottle Liquor have already received a bonus of $665,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Davis won the prize in the MEGA Millions game played in California and 41 other states. The winning numbers were 4, 10, 26, 32, 41 and Mega 31.
