A Regional Transit Authority bus struck and killed a 71-year-old man Wednesday night on Santa Barbara Street in San Luis Obispo.

A 71-year-old man died tonight after being struck by a county Regional Transit Authority bus in San Luis Obispo.

The bus on Route 12A was traveling northbound on Santa Barbara Street near the intersection with Broad Street when it struck a pedestrian in the roadway at 8:27 p.m., according to Capt. Ian Parkinson of the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

The man suffered major injuries, including head trauma, Parkinson said.

According to Parkinson, at least four people arrived on the scene shortly after the incident, followed by fire and law enforcement personnel.

One man administered CPR, but his attempts at resuscitation and those of emergency medics were ultimately unsuccessful, Parkinson said.

The man was taken to French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, where he was pronounced dead, the police captain said.

“I don’t know if he was in the roadway or crossing the roadway,” Parkinson said.

No passengers were on the bus apart from the female bus driver, Parkinson said, noting that the bus had just gone into service at the time of the incident.

The man’s identity was being withheld pending notification of his family, Parkinson said.
