Pismo Beach police on Friday identified the man who fell from an oceanfront bluff in Shell Beach as Octavio Alcantar, 29, of Grover Beach.
Police Sgt. Bryan Cox said the man had climbed over a back fence at a residence in the 2600 block of Spyglass Drive and was using a weed whacker on a 3-foot section of grass on Thursday afternoon.
Some construction workers heard the weed whacker idling for about 45 minutes to an hour, Cox said, and went to investigate. They found Alcantar lying on the beach, about 75 to 100 feet below the bluff.
They called authorities at 1:35 p.m.
Medics at the scene say he was in and out of consciousness as he was being readied for transport to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital. Cox said his leg and pelvic girdle were described as “mushy.”
He was no longer listed as a patient at the hospital on Friday, Cox said, but it was unclear if he was transferred to another hospital.
