The San Luis Obispo Police Department and the San Luis Obispo County Health Agency Tobacco Control Program conducted a tobacco sales compliance check Thursday at 34 retailers in San Luis Obispo.
Two 16-year-old decoys visited locations licensed to sell tobacco products. Out of the 34 retailers surveyed, four sold tobacco to a minor: Albertsons on Foothill Boulevard, University Gas and Snack Shop on Monterey Street, Broad Circle K on Broad Street and Mission Chevron on Marsh Street.
The city may penalize those stores by suspending their licenses to sell tobacco for 30 days.
The city of San Luis Obispo adopted an ordinance in 2003 that requires all retailers to obtain a license in order to sell tobacco products. An annual fee is collected and is applied toward the costs associated with administering and enforcing the license.
