Workers are tethered to the roof more than four stories up so they can work on the metal structure at the Galaxy Theatres now under construction in Atascadero. The proposed 10-screen cinema downtown is part of the Colony Square project, a redevelopment effort subsidized by city taxpayers with $1.5 million.
The plan also calls for two VIP auditoriums with plush accommodations that would show sporting events and concerts and would have access to a bar where food, beer and wine could be served. The theater's state alcohol license, supported by the Atascadero City Council, is pending.
The theater is slated to open in time for the holidays. It could face competition from the proposed 10-screen La Plaza cinemas nearby. Galaxy representatives say the the two could not survive together.
