Child suffers major injuries in North County wreck

A 6-year-old Visalia girl suffered major injuries Saturday when the car she was in was struck by a pickup truck on Highway 46 East near McMillan Canyon Road.

CHP officers said the crash occurred about 12:20 p.m., when a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Megan Lira, 25, of Visalia veered into the eastbound lane in an attempt to avoid hitting a vehicle that had slowed abruptly in the westbound lane.

Lira then lost control of the sedan, which spun counterclockwise before it was hit by an eastbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Paul Greidanus, 35, of Tipton.

The girl, who was in the right rear seat, suffered major injuries. Lira suffered moderate injuries. Passenger Mauro Burden, 31, of Visalia and a 4-year-old girl in the middle rear seat suffered minor injuries.

They were taken by ambulance to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.

A third child, a 2-year-old girl who was in a child safety seat inside the Malibu, was not injured.

Greidanus was not visibly injured but reported experiencing neck pain, according to the CHP.

The crash was under investigation Saturday afternoon.
