San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Task Force deputies early this morning detonated what appeared to be a pipe bomb found near a duck pond in Oceano.
Deputies at the department’s south station were on patrol at 2:26 a.m. when they came across a suspicious device burning near the pump station at the pond, located near Norswing and Pershing drives, according to sheriff’s spokesman Rob Bryn.
The deputies extinguished the small fire and found what appeared to be a homemade explosive device consisting of a can wrapped in cloth, he said. They found what appeared to be a pipe bomb inside the can.
Bomb Task Force deputies responded to handle the item and took it to the nearby Dunes to detonate it at 5:30 a.m.

“We believe this was simply an attempt to detonate a homemade explosive for fun,” Bryn said, “and that’s not what anybody should do. It’s a very dangerous thing to do.”
