Cattle drive, Bieber kick off festivities

The California Mid-State Fair opens its 12-day run today with a cattle drive through the streets of Paso Robles and a concert by teen pop superstar Justin Bieber.

About 50 head of cattle will leave the Golden Hills Auto Center at Highway 46 and Golden Hills Road at 10 a.m.

Riders and cowboys will guide the cattle down Golden Hills Road to Union Road, cross North River Road to the 13th Street Bridge, then turn right down Riverside Avenue to the fairgrounds. They’re expected to arrive between 11 and 11:30 a.m.

The fair’s other big-name acts include rock legends Aerosmith and Sammy Hagar, along with Grammy Award-winning country singer Keith Urban and alternative rock band Weezer.

Children can get into the fair for free Monday. With Armed Forces Day on July 31, admission is free with valid military identification.

Tuesday is Senior’s Day, with admission discounted to $4 for anyone 62 and older. Fair gates will open at 10 a.m., two hours earlier than regular opening.

New at this year’s fair is daily World Champion Mutton Bustin’, in which kids ages 6 and younger weighing 60 pounds or less can try to ride a sheep for a full six seconds and be scored the same way professional bull riders are
