Authorities destroy 31,000 pot plants found in Los Padres National Forest

A large marijuana growing operation in the Los Padres National Forest was found and removed by authorities Thursday.

Approximately 31,000 mature marijuana plants were removed from the Rinconada Trail area east of Santa Margarita.

An AK-47 assault rifle was found at the site, and extensive trash and irrigation pipe littered the wooded area, according to a news release from the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department.

Authorities spent all day removing the plants. A wet winter is partially credited for created such a large crop.
