Lucia Mar students will have to pay more to ride the bus

The Lucia Mar school district board on Tuesday approved transportation fee increases for students who ride the bus.

The board, however, voted to reverse an earlier decision to eliminate two bus routes, which would have affected 112 students, 61 of whom attend Ocean View Elementary.

Board members had taken action last week based upon district transportation policies that were incorrect, Superintendent Jim Hogeboom said.

The board voted 5-0 to approve the transportation fees; trustees Erik Howell and David Foster were absent.

The fees will increase to $1.50 from $1 for regular-fee students and to $0.75 from $0.50 for reduced-fee students. All students still need to purchase a $10 bus pass in addition to the daily fees.

It was not immediately known how much the increases could raise for the district. District administrators have said they face a $5 million shortfall in the next fiscal year, which starts July 1.
