Motorcyclist is injured after running into packaging tape strung across road

A 26-year-old motorcyclist suffered a broken wrist and scrapes Wednesday after someone strung clear packaging tape across the roadway on Capistrano Drive in Atascadero.

John Ackerman of San Luis Obispo was traveling west about 1:15 p.m. when he lost control of his motorcycle while trying to avoid the approximately waist-high tape.

Ackerman told police he believes he ran into the tape. He was taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, police said. Ackerman was wearing a helmet.

Witnesses reported seeing teenagers in the immediate area, police said, and one teen appeared to be recording video with his mobile phone. They ran from the scene northbound into an adjacent apartment complex or into Stadium Park, police said.

Witnesses described the teenagers as two white males, approximately 15 years old. One was reported as wearing a black cap, black shorts and a light blue shirt while the other was wearing a blue shirt with vertical stripes or possibly a jersey.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are looking to the public to help identify potential suspects. Anyone who has information about the incident can call 470-3226.
