Memorial Day ceremonies in San Luis Obispo County

Sunday's event


» Annual memorial service 2:30 to 4 p.m. Adobe Church on Airport Road. Sponsored by Friends of the Adobes, Inc. Humble service led by Father Larry Gosselin of the Mission San Miguel; music accompanied by Cactus Harris on the old pump organ; family remembrances by Ray Pesenti and Maggie Vandergon and refreshments provided by Agua Caliente Chapter No. 1359 of Questers.

Monday's events


» A formation of World War II and other military aircraft will perform flyovers during Memorial Day ceremonies at Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero, Santa Margarita, and Los Osos cemeteries. Sponsored by the Estrella Warbirds Museum of Paso Robles, the American Legion, and AMVETS National Service Foundation. The Freedom Flight pilots, crew members and owners of these historic aircraft are all veterans dating from WWII to the present, organizers said. The planes may also be viewed during visiting hours at the Museum’s Hangar One Exhibit, 4251 Dry Creek Road, Paso Robles.


» Ceremony 11 a.m. hosted by The Five Cities Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 2829 and the Arroyo Grande American Legion Post 136. Arroyo Grande Cemetery, 895 El Camino Real, Arroyo Grande. Flag ceremony by Civil Air Patrol Squadron 103 and rifle salute by the American Legion Honor Guard.


» Ceremony at the "The Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial, adjacent to the Atascadero Lake Park and Charles Paddock Zoo on Highway 41 West. Music, military art displays, and hot dogs for the public at 12 p.m. Ceremony and wreath laying at 1 p.m.

» Ceremony 11 a.m. at the Atascadero Cemetery, off of Highway 41 at 1 Cemetery Hill Road, Atascadero. Speakers and laying of a wreath. Potluck luncheon to follow at VFW Post 2814, 9555 Morro Road Atascadero.


» Memorial Day ceremony. 11 a.m. Veterans Memorial Building parking lot, 1000 Main St., Cambria. Cambria Chorale and others to sing, keynote talk by Tim Haley, co-founder of the "Faces of Freedom" memorial in Atascadero. Dedication of memorial for those missing in action. Followed by barbecue sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary.


» “Lost at Sea” memorial service for all those lost at sea. 3 p.m. Cayucos Pier.


» “We Remember!” Ceremony. 11 a.m. Los Osos Valley Funerals, Cremations & Memorial Park. 2250 Los Osos Valley Road, Los Osos. Master of ceremonies Major Jim Hawkins, USMC (Ret.) with speaker Chuck Ward representing the Purple Heart Trail. Featuring the Just in Time Sky Divers and the Central Coast Leatherneck Honor Guard, CHP Helicopters, SLO County Band, Gold Coast Chorus and more. Lunch provided by the Kiwanis Club of Bay Osos. 528-1500.


» Ceremony 11 a.m. at Paso Robles District Cemetery, 45 Nacimiento Lake Drive, Featuring American Legion Post 50 Commander Ed Tedeschi, City Councilman Ed Steinbeck, Paso Cemetery Bard John Bertoni, Captain Dan Zisa of Camp Roberts, Pastor Steve Orduno and Singing Hands Choir. Gun Salute by honor guards of the American legion post 50 and VFW Post 10965.


» Ceremony 11 a.m. Pismo Beach Pier. Keynote speaker Captain (Ret.) Les Evans Presentation of colors, MIA/POW honors, laying of a wreath, and a reading of “unknown soldier” by Chief Master Sergeant (Ret.) Warren Addison.


» Open House at the Central Coast Veterans Museum, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Veterans Memorial Building, 801 Grand Ave., San Luis Obispo. Refreshments with be served.

» “Memorial Day Veterans Remembrance” service, co-sponsored by American Legion Post 66 and Wheeler/Smith Mortuary. 11 a.m. San Luis Obispo Cemetery, 2890 S. Higuera St., San Luis Obispo. Presentation of medals of valor to families of service members killed in action in Iraq in Afghanistan. Raising of the flag, the “Gettysburg address,” laying of a wreath, and firing salute. Barbecue to follow from 12 to 5 p.m. at Moose Lodge, 1130 Orcutt Road. $8 or free to military members, law enforcement, and firefighters.


» Ceremony 10:45 a.m. Santa Margarita Cemetery, one mile east of Santa Margarita on Highway 58. Featuring the dedication of an Eagle Scout cemetery beautification project by Boy Scout Troup 123.


» Ceremony 11 a.m. at Templeton District Cemetery, 100 Templeton Road. Featuring guest speaker Col. Barbara Nuismer, Commander of Camp Roberts; dedication of new flag poles; color guard presentation and salute. Lunch following at American Legion Post 220, 801 S. Main St., Templeton. 434-1402.
