With Memorial Day just around the corner, the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously recognized the Faces of Freedom memorial in Atascadero as the county’s official veterans memorial.
Located at Atascadero Lake, the memorial was dedicated in 2008 and honors all U.S. veterans, with a particular emphasis on the 23,000 who live on the Central Coast.
The memorial is comprised of three components — a sculpture, an engraved brick pathway and a 70-foot-long black granite Heroes Wall with the inscribed names of 230 county veterans. The memorial was built by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation under the direction of Col. William Hatch.
