A Santa Margarita man was arrested after allegedly trying to hit people with his car after they stopped him from trying to hit a child in the face.

At 3:49 p.m. Wednesday, people living in the area of H and Encina streets heard screaming and yelling coming from the corner. A man, later identified as Clifford Earl McKercher, was allegedly seen trying to hit a juvenile in the face.

Neighbors tried to intervene, and one hit McKercher in the face after he allegedly lunged at them.

McKercher then got into his car and allegedly tried to hit two adults with his car. One person jumped out of the way and another ran behind a tree.

A third person wrote down the license plate number of the associated car, and deputies were able to trace it to a house in the 22500 block of I Street.

Deputies found McKercher, 53, who matched the description of the suspect. A 1980s Volvo that appeared to be the car used during the alleged assault was also found. Its license plates had been removed.

McKercher was booked into County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $25,000.
