Hundreds of birds found during cockfighting bust in Nipomo

Three men have been arrested in a cockfighting bust in Nipomo, according to the county Sheriff’s Department.

They are Paul Andrew Castellanos, 47, of Nipomo; Andy Ybarra Castellanos, 77, of Nipomo; and Juan Manuel Leva, 63, of Santa Maria.

Several local law enforcement agencies assisted in the investigation. Authorities estimate about 600 fighting cocks were kept at 1120 Grace Lane on the site of a 19-acre farm in rural Nipomo.

Both Castellanos men are being booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of possession of birds with intent to fight and possessing cockfighting implements. Leva-Corral was booked on possession of fighting birds.

Some of the roosters will be kept on the property site with documentation and oversight by law enforcement officials while others will be turned over to the San Luis Obispo County of Animal Services for purposes of evidence.
