UPDATE 8:55 p.m.: Caltrans advises that Highway 46 could reopen about 10 p.m. tonight.
UPDATE 8:39 p.m.: Traffic into San Luis Obispo County is being diverted to Highway 33. Motorists would need to take the 33 north to Highway 41 and travel west to reach Paso Robles, adding 30 to 45 minutes to the drive depending on traffic.
A major-injury crash in Kern County east of the San Luis Obispo County line has prompted the California Highway Patrol to close Highway 46 between Highways 41 and 33.
The 46 was closed at the Y-intersection east of Paso Robles just before 8 p.m., so motorists headed for the Central Valley must use Highway 41 through Cholame.
