George Carpenter, 74, was reported missing about 2 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

A dog belonging to George Carpenter, the elderly San Luis Obispo man reported missing last month, has been found near Gorda in Monterey County.

Carpenter, 74, was last seen at approximately 2 p.m. Dec. 23 when he left his home to take the dog, Scooter, to Laguna Lake Park. His family reported him missing that evening.

On Jan. 20, a man living near Gorda off Highway 1 north of San Simeon reported that Scooter, a black Labrador retriever with no tail, wandered up to his home in the late afternoon. The dog appeared to be thin and in fair condition. The dog was wearing a collar and the license number on the tag matched the license number issued by San Luis Obispo County Animal Services.

Neither Carpenter, who suffers from dementia and can get lost in familiar surroundings, nor his vehicle, a Jeep Comache, was found.

As soon as weather conditions permit, the Monterey County Sheriff's Department plans to do an aerial search of Gorda and the surrounding area. Additional searches may take place, depending on what is found.

A San Luis Obispo police investigator plans to bring Scooter back to San Luis Obispo on Friday.
