Charges filed in Avila Beach bar stabbing

Criminal charges have been filed against the man and woman allegedly involved in a stabbing incident at an Avila Beach bar on Friday, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Michael Darrien Simmons, 43, is accused of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly slashing a man with a box cutter at Mr. Rick’s bar on Front Street about 10:30 p.m.

Janet Ella Simmons, 50, is being charged with aiding a felon after allegedly taking the box cutter from Michael Simmons after the incident.

The victim was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, where he was treated for a serious neck wound, according to authorities. Janet Simmons posted $20,000 bail and was released from County Jail on Tuesday.

Michael Simmons is being held on $300,000 bail and remains in custody at County Jail, authorities said. He is a registered sex offender whose last known address was in Atascadero, according to the Megan’s Law Web site.

The next court appearance for the defendants is an arraignment scheduled for Feb. 22.
