An 82-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly snatching a 6-month-old baby in a Grover Beach grocery store parking lot.
At 9:32 p.m., Grover Beach police were called to the Vons supermarket at 1758 W. Grand Ave., where a woman said her infant had been abducted by a man named Peter Hewitt, whom she knew.
The mother and another person followed Hewitt in another vehicle, according to police. The pair were able to direct officers to a home in Arroyo Grande where they said they saw Hewitt enter the garage with the baby.
Officers from Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach arrived at the home, where they found that Hewitt had locked himself and the baby inside the vehicle in the garage. Officers forced the garage open and saw Hewitt holding the baby inside the car. After a struggle, they were able to take the baby back.
