No sign of missing SLO man George Carpenter after two-day search

Searchers did not find missing San Luis Obispo man George Carpenter after spending two days looking in the area in Monterey County near where his truck and dog were found.

Carpenter, who has dementia, has been missing since Dec. 23 after he drove to Laguna Lake Park in San Luis Obispo with his black Labrador retriever, Scooter.

Investigators with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department had spent most of the weekend of Jan. 23 and 24 searching the rugged terrain between Big Sur and Fort Hunter Liggett in southern Monterey County where Carpenter’s truck was found during an aerial search.

The truck was spotted after Scooter wandered up to a residence in a remote area about seven miles inland from the coastal hamlet of Gorda.

Authorities said that the dog traveled three to five miles from where the truck was located.

Authorities had planned to take Scooter back to the area this past weekend to help in the search.
