Craigslist scam asks people to cash bogus check and keep money for themselves

The San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department is warning SLO County residents about a scam involving Craigslist. According to the Sheriff's Department, the suspect sends a fake check to a seller for an amount higher than the price negotiated by the seller. The suspect asks the seller to cash the check and keep the extra $100 for themselves, and send the remaining cash back to the suspect via Western Union.

Sheriff's investigators say the check sent by the suspect is a fraud. If someone using a similar scam has contacted you, contact your local law enforcement agency.
