10-year-old boy rescued from strong current at Prefumo Creek

Rescuers pulled a 10-year-old boy to safety Friday afternoon after he got stuck trying to ride Boogie Boards with a friend along a rain-swollen Prefumo Creek.

Clad in skateboarding-style helmets, the two boys entered the creek with their boards about 4:30 p.m. near Laguna Lake Municipal Golf Course, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

The creek’s rainwater-driven current overwhelmed the boys, police said. One lost his board, but got out of the creek.

The other boy grabbed some plants along the embankment, but was still stuck in the current, according to police. Neighbors who heard their cries for help called authorities.

Rescuers at the end of Rubio Court got the stranded boy out with a ladder after securing a rope around him, police said. They were turned over to their parents at the scene, according to the San Luis Obispo Fire Department.

Two fire engine crews, plus one truck and a batallion chief, as well as four police officers, responded to the scene, according to the Fire Department.

Authorities would not disclose the boys’ names.
