Utopia European Bakery Cafe in San Luis Obispo has new owners and a fresh look.
Scott and MJ Lenhoff closed escrow on the Broad Street business on Dec. 31 and reopened Jan. 4, after spending several days renovating the space.
The refurbished Utopia has updated landscaping, black awnings and a redesigned interior, which has been painted white to brighten the cafe. Utopia also has a new logo.
Scott Lenhoff said he and his wife, who moved recently to Pismo Beach from Palm Springs, had been searching for a business to buy after “falling in love with San Luis Obispo.”

They found a for-sale advertisement on the Internet and spent the past six or seven months coordinating the deal. Lenhoff declined to disclose the sale price.
“We bought it intact,’’ Lenhoff said. “We have the same great menu and the same great staff.”
Lenhoff said the cafe has introduced pizza. It also will begin a happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m.
Utopia had been owned by Kees Docter, a Dutch native who opened the red-brick bakery in 2001.
Lenhoff said Docter moved to Canada, where he operates a Utopia bakery and cafe.
