CHP: San Luis Obispo man who died after scooter crash was drunk

A San Luis Obispo man killed when he ran a red light on his electric scooter earlier this month was “extremely intoxicated” according to toxicology results released Tuesday by the CHP.

Clayt Casey, 50, of San Luis Obispo was hit by a pickup truck and then died of a head injury at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, authorities said. He was not wearing a helmet.

A spokesman for the CHP would not release Casey’s blood alcohol level but said that it was well beyond the legal limit.

Casey was riding the scooter east along Los Ranchos Road just after 10:30 a.m. when he ran a red light and went into the intersection with Highway 227, according to a CHP report.

Casey was thrown off the scooter and struck a pickup’s windshield before landing on the ground, according to the CHP.
