Victim ID’d in Hwy. 101 fatality

Authorities on Sunday identified the man killed when he was struck while walking along Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo on Saturday as Ismael Gamboa, 22, of Santa Maria.

He was struck by a 2007 BMW being driven by George Patton, 49, of Fresno, according to the CHP.

About 9:10 p.m., Patton was driving about 65 mph in the freeway’s southbound fast lane just south of Madonna Road, the CHP reported.

Gamboa was walking along the freeway’s right southbound shoulder shortly after getting out of his own vehicle, according to the CHP.

For reasons investigators have not yet determined, Gamboa ran directly into traffic, and then was struck by the BMW.

The CHP is still investigating the incident.

Officers at the scene found Patton was drunk, according to a CHP report. He was booked at County Jail on suspicion of drunken driving.

The incident tied up traffic along the freeway through the night.

CHP officers, assisted by the San Luis Obispo Police Department, helped direct traffic when one lane was closed about 9:30 p.m., according to the CHP.
