Grover Beach Elementary School put on lockdown briefly Tuesday afternoon

Grover Beach police have identified the man they arrested Tuesday afternoon after a brief lockdown of Grover Beach Elementary School.

Elemetrius Owens, 34, of Grover Beach was arrested on suspicion of exhibiting a firearm and violating the Gun Free School Zone Act after a passerby reported seeing a man with a gun near the school at 12:30 p.m., police said. That report led to a 15- to 20-minute lockdown of the school while officers searched for the suspect.

“A perimeter was established, the school was placed on lockdown, a search was conducted, and we found a subject in possession of a handgun,” Grover Beach Lt. John Peters said.

Owens was arrested without incident, Peters said, and has been booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Owen lives in an apartment complex near the school.
