Gere Sibbach to run for sixth term as SLO County's auditor-controller

Citing his experience, longtime County Auditor-Controller Gere Sibbach has announced that he will run for re-election to a sixth term next year.

Sibbach filed papers with the county Clerk-Recorder Wednesday morning.

“As a result of widespread economic disruptions and budgetary problems at the federal and state level, the County of San Luis Obispo faces significant fiscal challenges that will continue for some time into the future,” Sibbach wrote in a press release.

“Under these circumstances the County needs a qualified and experienced leader in the Auditor-Controller's Office,” he wrote. “With the support of our excellent department staff, I can help navigate through these challenges in order to preserve local jobs and maintain critical service levels for the taxpayers.”

The Auditor-Controller is the county's chief accountant. He provides financial information and analysis regarding public funds, and audits county departments to protect against embezzling

Sibbach was elected Auditor-Controller in 1990, and reelected in 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006.

Prior to being elected to his current job in 1990, he served as the county’s Deputy Auditor-Controller from 1983 to 1986 and Hospital CFO from 1986 to 1990.

Sibbach also served as Finance Director/Treasurer for the City of Morro Bay from 1980 to 1983 and was part-time elected City Treasurer for Atascadero from 1987 to 1990.

He received his Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees in Mathematics from Cal Poly, and since 1975 has periodically served as a lecturer in math and accounting courses for the university

A licensed Certified Public Accountant since 1980, Sibbach is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the State and the Association of County Auditors, among other professional organizations.

He and his wife, Diane, are graduates of Atascadero High School and live in Atascadero. They have two children, Celeste and Thomas.
