Working with local landowners, County/Cal Fire conducted a 920-acre prescribed burn Saturday about a mile south of Lopez Lake, near Phoenix Canyon east of Arroyo Grande.
The burn is part of a program to reduce the amount of wildland brush in areas historically prone to fires, according to Cal Fire. Locally Cal Fire works with the San Luis Obispo County Range Improvement Association so the burns also provide some range improvement for participating ranchers.
Five fire engines, one bulldozer, a helicopter and three fire crews worked on Saturday’s burn, according to Cal Fire.
Working with Pacific Gas and Electric Co., a 190-acre prescribed burn is set for Monday through Wednesday on company property along the ocean near Point Buchon and in Crowbar Canyon, according to Cal Fire. If weather conditions aren’t right for that burn, it will be rescheduled.
