A man suspected of carjacking a woman at gunpoint near Cal Poly on Wednesday evening has been arrested in Santa Barbara County.
Ryan Joseph Soqui, 23, of Grover Beach was booked into County Jail on Friday after local law enforcement officials tracked him down at the Gaviota Tunnel rest stop.
San Luis Obispo police traveled to Santa Barbara County after receiving a tip that Soqui was going to meet another Grover Beach resident in Isla Vista. Officers conducted surveillance on that resident's vehicle as she left Isla Vista and headed north on Highway 101, and they saw that a male passenger was inside. When the car parked at the rest stop, officers were able to identify the passenger as Soqui.
Soqui was arrested on suspicion of carjacking, kidnapping and robbery. A BB gun resembling a semi-automatic handgun was found in the car. The female driver was interviewed in San Luis Obispo and released.
