Great Pumpkins took over Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo on Thursday as growers from throughout the area brought their giant gourds to compete for the title of biggest pumpkin.

Besides the adult contest, children also competed to see who could raise the biggest orange giant.

The top prize went to a pumpkin, estimated at 1,100 pounds, grown by Pace Encell of Solvang.
