A "news alert" circulating the Internet saying a 3-year-old Oceano boy has been kidnapped is a hoax, local law enforcement confirmed.
The announcement began circulating via e-mail and text message around 9 a.m. Monday, Sheriff's Department spokesman Rob Bryn said.
A similar hoax was distributed about six months ago.
People who receive messages about alleged missing children should verify their accuracy through the CHP's Amber Alert System at http://www.chp.ca.gov/, Bryn said, before forwarding them.
