Two county roads workers collected more than $41,000 while on administrative leave this summer

The county has received the final tab for two road workers it placed on paid administrative leave for much of the summer – more than $41,000.

The exact tally for Randy Ghezzi was $24,903.68, according to Human Resources Director Tami Douglas-Schatz. Keller received $16,350.88.

Public works Director Paavo Ogren placed both North County road workers on paid leave June 1 without giving a reason.

Ghezzi resigned as road supervisor on Aug. 31, and Keller went from roads section supervisor to civil engineering technician, at lower pay.

Ogren and Chairman Bruce Gibson of the Board of supervisors have steadfastly refused for months to say whether either man was suspected of criminal activity, citing privacy concerns and the fact that both men are under civil service protection.

A spokesman from the District Attorney’s Office said it was in no way involved with the Keller-Ghezzi situation.

With an annual operating budget of $32 million, the Public Works Department has about 200 employees.
