Officials have identified the man killed while riding a bicycle near the Highway 1 entrance of Cuesta College on Wednesday afternoon.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that Eugene George Spruill Jr., 69, of San Luis Obispo died after being struck by a truck at about 1:22 p.m. in the northbound lane of the highway about 100 feet from the Dairy Creek Road intersection.
Witnesses told the CHP that Spruill was riding on the right-hand shoulder of the highway when he veered into the path of a half-ton pickup truck traveling about 45 mph in the slow lane, CHP Sgt. Danny Koetsier said.
The driver of the truck was not injured, and neither alcohol nor drugs are considered to be a factor in the collision.
