A Templeton man killed in a three-car crash that also injured three others near Morro Bay on Saturday has been identified by the California Highway Patrol as 77-year-old Thomas Mercer.
Around 2 p.m. Atascadero resident Nicholas Bundren, 24, was driving a Ford Fusion west on Highway 41 just east of Mission Drive when the vehicle traveled into the oncoming lane, according to the CHP.
The left front of Bundren’s car hit the front of an oncoming Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Mercer. A third car behind Mercer swerved into the other lane to avoid the collision. Bundren’s vehicle then returned into the original lane and the back of his car crashed into the right side of the third car.
Bundren, Mercer and Mercer’s wife, Diane Mercer, 64, were taken via ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo with major injuries.
Thomas Mercer was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the third car, Richard Gentil, 27, of Los Osos suffered minor injuries and did not require medical care.
All passengers were wearing seat belts, and no arrests were made.
Shannon Downing, spokeswoman for Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, said Wednesday that both Bundren and Diane Mercer remained in the hospital in fair condition.
