The participants first underwent two days of classroom training and a health screening before taking part in Tuesday’s hands-on session at Camp Roberts, just north of Paso Robles. On Wednesday morning, they head out to fight wildfires in Northern California, officials said.
In Tuesday’s training, the soldiers practiced using hand tools for digging fire lines, cutting down bushes and using fire shelters, said Sgt. Ian Kummer, a public affairs officer.
The soldiers are from the California National Guard’s 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team out of Southern California.
