Cal Poly student identified as victim in fatal stairwell collapse

A Cal Poly student has been identified as the victim of a staircase collapse in Folsom on July 3.

In a statement released by Cal Poly on Wednesday, Shun Xiang “Chris” Yuan, a graduate student in the College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences, was confirmed to have died from injuries suffered in the incident.

Yuan, 26, of San Francisco was walking down the stairs from the third floor of a friend’s apartment when steps collapsed under him.

Police responded the afternoon of July 3 to a report of a stairway collapse. They found Yuan, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

Larry Kamer, spokesman for the apartment complex's owner, Gerson Bakar of San Francisco, said that another staircase failed last year. No one was injured in that instance, and the bracing on the stairs was replaced. He said the staircase that collapsed over the weekend was scheduled to be repaired.

Contractors have been brought in to install temporary wooden bracings on all of the staircases in the apartment building. Kamer said additional work, including installing heavier bracings, is ongoing.

Fire officials and city building inspectors are expected to investigate the incident.
