Gas leak that caused evacuations in SLO is under control, officials say

UPDATE 1:25 p.m.: City officials announced that the gas leak has been brought under control and businesses were allowed to reopen as of 1 p.m. Traffic on the 800 block of Monterey is open, but construction crews remain working at the scene. Motorists are encouraged to travel a different route if possible.

Original story: A one-block stretch of Monterey Street in downtown San Luis Obispo has been evacuated because of a gas leak.

Police and fire officials have closed Monterey Street between Chorro and Morro streets to vehicles and pedestrians, and are evacuating the buildings on that block, authorities said.

A construction crew replacing a sewer line struck a gas line at about 11 a.m., causing gas to escape, a worker said at the scene.
