Vickie Conkle, a Mounted Volunteer Patrol (MVP) volunteer rider for California State Parks, trotted her horse named Handsome through the surf on a warm afternoon Sunday, Feb. 4, in Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. The patrol assists the ranger staff at various State Parks in San Luis Obispo County.
According to the group’s Facebook page, “Mounted Volunteer Patrol at Oceano Dunes and Beach assists local law enforcement in the reporting and patrolling of the beach and adjoining dunes.”
Members may not be on a payroll while performing their duties, the site says, and work a minimum of 80 volunteer hours a year.
